CNC Sinker EDM
AG40L
High Precision, No-Flush, CNC Sinker EDM

Sodick’s AG40L CNC Sinker EDM is a precision machining solution for small to medium sized medical device, aerospace, energy-related parts and die/molds that require close tolerances, fine surface finishes and deep rib machining.  The AG40L includes many upgrades and replaces the AG35L CNC Sinker EDM.

AG40L Competitive Advantages

  • Direct Drive Linear Motors with Heidenhain absolute glass scale feedback; results in no flush machining and guaranteed machining accuracy
  • Menu Driven Control automatically writes the NC code and selects the best cutting conditions
  • Motion Controller provides simultaneous axis movement & makes spark gap changes in real time
  • Rise-Fall Worktank provides easy workpiece access and is ideal for automation
  • Since linear motors will never wear, they come with a 10 Year Positioning Guarantee
  • Zero Electrode Wear Circuit saves on electrode production cost

What our customers are saying.

"The benefits of linear motor-driven machines often far outweigh the advantages of ballscrew-driven machines, especially when it comes to positioning accuracy, part surface finishes and machine longevity."

AG40L Sinker EDM Samples: No Flush and No Electrode Wear
The high axis speed and high acceleration of linear motor drives create its own even and natural flushing condition which leads to perfect part accuracy.  Manual flushing varies on the operator’s EDM experience and may lead to uneven discharged surface.

AG40L CNC Sinker EDM: Product Description

Linear Motor Drives with Absolute Glass Scale Feedback
Sodick’s AG40L linear motor driven, high precision CNC Sinker EDM features new user-friendly EDMing technology which further enhances productivity and EDMing precision.  Linear motors do not have ball screws, the motor itself drives the table at high axis speed combined with high acceleration resulting in its own natural flushing condition.  The up-and-down motion of the electrode creates a pumping effect, sweeping out the eroded particles, gas and tar from the spark gap.  The machining result does not vary from an operators experience.  The machine’s linear motor axes drives are coupled with 4 millionths Heidenhain absolute glass scale feedback on the X,Y,Z axes which ensure precision cutting and positioning accuracy.  With the new Heidenhain ultra-precision absolute linear glass scales, the true machine position is always known.  This reduces set-up time, since the operator no longer has to home the machine after it has been powered down.  Sodick’s X,Y,Z linear motor drives have no backlash and are backed by Sodick’s 10 year positioning accuracy guarantee.

SMART Control Technology
The machine’s Windows XP based, high speed, user-friendly, multi-tasking control comes standard with a large 15” LCD touch screen which is easy to view and eliminates glare.  Standard items; such as, the LAN network connection and a 1GB USB memory stick make it easy to transfer programming files.  The 4GB compact flash card memory eliminates hard drives which can crash resulting in lost data.  The menu driven LN Assist screen prompts the operator to input cutting conditions such as electrode shape – material – electrode undersize – cutting depth and required surface finish.  The control will automatically input the best cutting conditions and offsets and write the NC program.  The AG40L precision CNC sinker EDM comes with the K-SMC (Sodick Motion Controller) which provides simultaneous axes movement and instantaneous servo response time.  This results in improved machining speed and workpiece accuracy.

Automation Ready
Sodick’s CNC sinker EDMs are available with optional automatic tool changers, C axis, rotary axis System 3R, Erowa and Hirschmann robots which further enhance machining productivity.  The AG40L comes with a 3-sided rise fall worktank which enhances the automation process.  The worktank can be programmed to rise and fall to easily allow a robotic arm to reach inside the worktank to load or unload a workpiece or electrode.

Standard Technology
Standard Sinker EDM technology includes the SGF2 circuit that eliminate electrode wear and saves on electrode production cost, the SQ circuit which provides additional gap voltage for small intricate shaped electrodes and the SVC circuit used for high speed finishing of large electrodes.  The AG40L is designed with Sodick’s new Environment Adaptation System.  Machine temperature is stabilized by circulating the air inside the column.  Heat insulation material covers the entire column and prevents the outside air from affecting the temperature inside the column improving the machine’s thermal stability.  A dielectric chiller and transformer is also included.

Sodick ISO certified EDM manufacturing facility
About Sodick:
Established in 1976, Sodick is the world’s largest EDM manufacturer with over 50,000 EDMs sold worldwide.  Sodick Inc. has three technical centers located in Chicago, New Jersey and Southern California that provide regional customer support.  Sodick has 7 ISO certified manufacturing facilities and 3,100 employees that are focused on building high precision CNC sinker EDMs.

All Sodick CNC sinker EDMs go through a final machine inspection.  Each CNC Sinker EDM's subcomponent is individually inspected.  Test cuts are performed on all sinker EDMs to check for dimensional part accuracy and quality surface finish. Components; such as, machine castings, ceramic components, circuitry boards, linear motor drives, control cabinets, dielectric tanks and motion controllers are all designed and manufactured underneath Sodick’s quality control.
