Q. WHAT IS THE "APPROACH PATTERN?" HOW IS IT USED?

A. Approach pattern is a parameter in the control that can be set to initiate and cancel the offset and taper two different ways. When it is set to 0, the offset and the taper get initiated as the machine moves along the line that the G41/51 or G42/52 are programmed on. So you end up with an angled approach and release line. When it is set to 1, the machine moves straight along the line that G41/51 or G42/52 is programmed on, but the center of the wire stays away from the next line of code by the amount of the offset and PERPENDICULAR to that line. It gets canceled the same way. The important thing to know here is the fact that it stays PERPENDICULAR to the next line. If you were cutting a die from the center to a corner, this will ruin your corner because the line that is adjacent to the first line will be ruined. Remember to set this parameter to the same value in both the "SET-TRAVEL" screen and in the "GRAPH-SCRNFLAG" screen.

Approach Pattern was not available on the MKX1 silver control. However, the control can be programmed to function similar to the approach Pattern function. To obtain a perpendicular approach you must first turn your offset on with a H000 value (ex: G41 H000;), execute the lead in line, then program your actual offset value on the following line (ex: H082). At the lead out line you will need to program a G40 H000 for a perpendicular lead out. You can also do the same using the taper codes.
